Things to Know Before Visiting Alghero: travel tips from locals

9 December 2025

If you’re getting ready to arrive in Alghero, first of all… HOW WONDERFUL!

Alghero is a city that truly gets under your skin — and we don’t say that just because we live here and have been welcoming guests for years. Every week we see people fall in love with this unique place: crystal-clear sea, historic alleyways, and unforgettable sunsets.

To help you make the most of your holiday, we’ve gathered some practical tips and a few “local secrets” that will help you experience Alghero at its very best.

How to get to Alghero (without stress)

By plane: Alghero–Fertilia Airport is extremely close to the city — you’ll be in the centre in just 15–20 minutes. If you’ve booked with us, let us know your arrival time: we can help arrange a taxi or a rental car through one of our trusted partners.

By car: If you’re driving from another part of Sardinia, you’ll enjoy scenic coastal roads and generally smooth traffic, even in high-season periods. Driving in Sardinia is a pleasure: sea views, nature, and quiet roads.

How to get around once you’re here

Alghero’s old town is meant to be explored on foot: narrow lanes, charming houses, and the sea always just around the corner.

To reach the most beautiful beaches just outside the city — Maria Pia, Le Bombarde, Lazzaretto — you can use the bus, bike, scooter, or a rental car.

And don’t underestimate a sunset walk — it’s one of the best things you can do!

What language do people speak?

Besides Italian, you’ll hear Algherese Catalan, a language that has existed here for centuries. In tourist areas, English is widely spoken, but a simple “ciao” or “grazie” in Italian is always appreciated.

What’s the weather like?

In summer, sunshine is guaranteed: bring sunscreen, a hat, and comfy beach sandals.

Spring and autumn are perfect for exploring and enjoying Alghero at its best, while winter is mild and wonderfully peaceful — ideal if you love slow, relaxing moments.

In every season, the sunset from the city walls never disappoints.

The beaches we love most

Alghero’s sea looks Photoshopped — we say it all the time to our guests. Don’t miss:

  • Lido di San Giovanni: lovely beaches with everything you need, including umbrellas, loungers, bars, and restaurants.
  • Maria Pia: white dunes and fragrant pine trees.
  • Le Bombarde: crystal-clear water and a lively atmosphere.
  • Lazzaretto: many small coves, each more beautiful than the last.
  • Neptune’s Grotto: an impressive natural cave accessible by boat or stairs.

Local tip: in high season, arrive early or book sunbeds and umbrellas online.

Eating well in Alghero (very easy here)

Alghero is a paradise for food lovers. Don’t leave without trying:

  • Catalan-style lobster
  • Sea urchins (when in season)
  • Algherese paella
  • Fregola with clams
  • Culurgiones
  • Crema catalana
  • Seadas with honey

Local tip: In summer, it’s best to book, especially if you already have a restaurant in mind.

Practical info to make your stay easier

Cards and ATMs are accepted everywhere, but having some coins is handy.
To be safe, we recommend drinking bottled water — it’s easy to find everywhere.
July and August are busier and more expensive: if you planned ahead, you’ve already won half the battle!
Alghero is generally safe for parking. In the old town, spaces can be limited, so follow local signs and ask your host for the best spots.

Local habits

  • Dinner is late here: from 8 pm onward.
  • Some shops close for a few hours in the afternoon.
  • When visiting churches, dress modestly.
  • Respect the environment and keep the beaches clean — always take your rubbish with you.
  • Taking sand, stones, or shells from Sardinia’s beaches is illegal. Fines range from €500 to €3000.

Everything else? Take it easy — Alghero is a relaxed city.

Safety

Alghero is safe and welcoming. You’ll feel comfortable from day one.

Local tip: keep an eye on your belongings on crowded beaches — just as you would anywhere else.
